Solar power to empower women launched in Kilifi

An international Solar Energy company has launched 825 Million shillings in Kilifi County to provide solar energy and open enterprises for women in rural areas.

The Multi-Million five-year program funded by the European Union dubbed Women Increasing Sustainable Energy Access and Use (WISE) was officially launched for the first time in Kenya at Majajani village in Kilifi County. Its aim is to establish solar energy enterprises at the villages which will be run by women groups.

According to Jackson Machuhi, the Barefoot Power chief executive officer they will partner with a local, regional and national financial institution to establish a Women Enterprise Finance Facility (WEFF) which would provide capital and incubate 5,550 women to run the enterprises.
