The current Nairobi senator, Gideon Mbuvi, commonly known as Sonko, has indicated that he will draft a bill on condoms and sanitary pants.
The bill was driven by various complaints from people on challenges facing young girls in accessing sanitary pads in a country where free condoms are dispensed in all public places.
Through his Facebook page post, the aspiring Nairobi governor through Jubilee ticket claimed that since sex is a choice the condoms should be for SALE while sanitary pads go for free as menstruation is no choice.
“I have seen the hashtag and as a Senator, I will draft a bill to that effect. Condoms should be for SALE, sanitary pads should be for FREE. Sex is a choice, menstruation is not,” Sonko wrote on the Facebook post.
His decision was highly commended by the people with many congratulating him while questioning the work of Women reps if such a decision came from men.
“Am a woman but am so surprised that this campaign was started by men..what’s the work of women rep in each county..ths are some seats which should be reduced to 7 that is a woman in each province….#condomforsalesanitaryforfree,” wrote one fan, Dorris.
“It’s okay but i think both should be given out freely. ..condoms help us to prevent the unwanted pregnancies and from getting the HIV virus. ..sometimes we don’t choose to have sex. .We find ourselves. ..#thinkingoutloud.” Mariam complained.
However, not all of those who saw the post welcomed the idea fully. In another angle, some pointed out that menstruation was not a disease that can kill compared to the facts that STDs and HIV-AIDS have killed many.
“Am a worried man.Y not both be free.Endangering male species.Aids is real,it kills, therefore we putting the lives of future Kenyans at risk. Both male and female’” Billy wrote on comment box
