Sonko nominates four to replace Igathe

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Wednesday said he is ready to nominate another deputy governor to replace Polycarp Igathe who resigned early this year.

The Nairobi city boss indicated that he had cut down his long list of 10 to four names and he is only waiting to consult the Jubilee Party leadership top brass on who to settle on.

Those in the list of Governor Sonko are former Nairobi County women representative aspirant Karen Nyamu, former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru, corporate guru Agness Kagure and lawyers Jane Weru.

Speaking in a local radio station, governor Sonko revealed that he prefers a woman taking up the Deputy Governor position, which fell vacant in January.

“I have four names in mind but I am waiting for consultations with top Jubilee party leadership who are my bosses to see who to choose.” said the governor.

On May 16 the governor had picked NRM General and lawyer Miguna Miguna to fill the DG post, a move that was met with a lot of criticism especially from the Jubilee fraternity.

The City Hall boss explained that the nomination of controversial lawyer was only done to respect the Supreme Court advisory.

The Supreme Court in March ruled that governors are free to pick fresh nominees within 14 days to replace their deputies in the event they resign, are impeached or die in office.

“I want to apologies. I appointed him (Miguna) out of anger, bitterness, and also there was a lot of pressure, intimidation and blackmail and so I gave them Miguna,” said the governor.
