South Sudan marked its 13th Independence Day on 9th July 2024. The High-Level Mediation for South Sudan – Tumaini Initiative – led by Lt. General Lazaro Sumbeiywo (Rtd) stands in solidarity with the nation, applauding its resilience and determination in the face of challenges.
South Sudan encountered numerous challenges on its path to independence, being the youngest nation globally.
Despite this, its citizens have shown steadfast dedication to peace and unity, reflecting resilience and optimism.
Honorable Charles Keter, the President’s Special Envoy and Advisor to the Great Lakes Region of International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), expressed sincere appreciation to the leaders and citizens of South Sudan for their efforts in promoting peace, stability, and unity.
Kenya reiterated its unwavering support and solidarity with South Sudan in the ongoing journey towards lasting peace, prosperity, and national cohesion.

The Special Envoy emphasized the importance of cooperation in advancing peace and security across the region, highlighting Kenya’s unwavering support for South Sudan in its current role as Chair of the East Africa Community.
“As South Sudan celebrates its independence, it is a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by previous generations and to honour their memory by ensuring that the dreams of a free and prosperous South Sudan are realized,” Hon. Keter said.
“It is an opportunity for South Sudan to embrace the spirit of inclusivity and diversity that defines the nation, turning cultural and linguistic differences into sources of strength,” he added.
The Chief Mediator has urged the leaders and citizens of South Sudan to engage in ongoing dialogue and work towards national reconciliation.
He called on leaders to create a future where every child in South Sudan can grow up in a peaceful nation, with access to quality education, healthcare, and opportunities for a better life.
The celebrations brought together South Sudanese nationals and students in Kenya who showcased their diverse culture through music and poetry.
