Stop Isolating Cancer Patients, Migori Residents Advised

Migori residents have been encouraged to stop isolating members of their families who are suffering from cancer. Addressing the media during World Palliative Day Sori Lakeside Director John Okeyo said that the patients get rejected by families due to the financial burden and implications they impart as a result of the cancer ailment they experience.Okeyo said that the financial burden mostly affects married women who face rejection and get isolated by their spouses after they are diagnosed with cancer. The official said that when the medical bills become the huge and unpayable majority of women end up being chased from their matrimonial homes. He called on the affected families to embrace chicken farming which he exuded confidence that will help reduce the financial burdens of healthcare treatment bills. Okeyo also encouraged Migori residents to join the NHIF scheme which will help ease their healthcare burdens. A palliative Nurse at the facility Ms. Caren Kasera and a social worker Ms. Anne Achieng said that the patients that seek medication at the hospital do not have any income to clear their bills. As social workers, we try as hard as possible to reach the community and sensitize spouses of cancer patients to understand that cancer is just like any other chronic disorder. Job WekesaOmukaya an oncologist nurse said that some of the cancer patients are isolated due to the poverty and hard economic times the family faces. He said that the hospital however does not chase away such patients as they are treated and arrangements are made to make sure that their medical bills are paid by the NHIF .
