Students charged over arson freed on bail

Twenty-one students from two different schools in Nairobi were yesterday charged with arson.Thirteen Lang’ata High School students who had been remanded at Kamiti juvenile remand home for five days on July 28, were yesterday charged with conspiring to burn their school.

The court heard that the 13, jointly with others not before the court, planned to burn down two classrooms and a dormitory block. They denied the charges before senior principal magistrate Martha Mutuku.

Three of them who were minors were released on a Sh200,000 bond. The other accused were released on the same bond with an alternative of Sh100,000. The case will be heard on September 27.

On the same matter, another set of eight Sunshine Secondary School students were charged with scheme to commit a crime while one of the scholars was further charged with attempted pyromania.

They repudiated the charges before Nairobi Children’s Court chief magistrate Lucy Gitari and were released on a personal bond of Sh50,000. The case will be mentioned on August 29.
