Tundu Lissu who is the Tanzania opposition leader has been arrested.
The Tanzania’s main opposition leader alongside other ChademaTz party officials and supporters were arrested by police hours before a planned Youth Day celebrations rally on 12, August in the Mbeya district
Tundu was scheduled to hold a celebration to mark International Youth Day, a gathering that police in Tanzania had outlawed. Police banned the gathering, alleging planned violent demonstrations
The arrest comes amidst President Samia Suluhu’s political reforms, moving away from her predecessor Magufuli’s authoritarian policies, including lifting a ban on opposition rallies
Chadema leader, Freeman Mbowe has strongly condemned the arrests calling for the immediate and unconditional release of all.
“We demand the immediate and unconditional release of all our leaders, members, and supporters who were arrested in various parts of the country,” he said on X, formerly Twitter.
The party is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to inform the public of every step of development.
