Targeted Crime: NPS Condemns Shooting of Kasipul MP Charles Were

By Grace Gilo

The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the shooting and death of Hon. Charles Were, the Member of Parliament for Kasipul.

The NPS, terming the crime as ‘heinous and senseless’, has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation.

“The nature of this crime appears to be both targeted and premeditated,” revealed the Police.

According to the Nairobi Regional Police Commander, the incident occurred at around 7:30 pm on Wednesday, when a white Toyota Crown vehicle stopped at a red traffic light on Ngong Road, near the City Mortuary roundabout.

Eyewitnesses indicated that a motorcycle carrying a rider and a passenger stopped alongside the car. The pillion passenger approached the vehicle and fired shots at the passenger side before quickly getting back on the motorcycle and fleeing the scene.

“The driver of the car and a male passenger, both unhurt, managed to rush the injured man to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” read the statement in part.

“Further details gathered at the hospital confirmed the deceased to be Hon. Charles Were, MP for Kasipul,” stated the NPS Spokesperson, Muchiri Nyaga.

President Ruto has mourned the late MP and urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

“May God grant the family and the people of Kasipul the strength to bear the loss of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were,” stated the Head of State.

“Those responsible must be held to account,” he said.

The Service extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, parliamentary colleagues, constituents, and close associates.

The police further urged anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the nearest police station, a law enforcement officer, or call the toll-free numbers.
