Principals have been advised to notify students when dormitories are burnt in other schools to curb the crime.
They should also be told the punishment for the crime, Mbeere South Subcounty Principals Association chairman Musyoka Moshe said.
He said principals should not leave their students in the dark about school arson. Moshe, who is also Nyangwa Boys High School principal, said head teachers should explain how burning schools hurts students, their families, their community and their country.
Nyangwa Boys High School was the best in the subcounty in last year’s KCPE exam.
Moshe told principals to inform students on measures taken by the government to stop arson. He said students should be informed about the number of schools that were burnt by students, the arrest and prosecution of suspects and the cost of rebuilding to be paid by parents.
Moshe said students should be told about the government’s rule that no student from a burnt school can be transferred to another school. He urged principals to place more than one teacher on duty each day with each working specified hours to monitor the students.
