The team representing Kenya at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was today presented with the official travel kit to be worn by the Olympics-bound team heading to Japan. President Uhuru Kenyatta presented the kit to the Kenyan contingent led by the National Olympic Committee – Kenya (NOC-K) President Paul Tergat at State House, Nairobi during the official send-off ceremony for the team.
Inspired by Kenya’s national colors and symbols, the attire will be donned by the traveling contingent that will begin to depart for the Olympic games today. The volleyball team will be the first group of athletes to leave traveling to Kuruma Japan for a two-week acclimatization period as they gear up for the start of the competition on July 23rd in Tokyo.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Uhuru Kenyatta lauded Team Kenya for their continuous efforts to put Kenya on the map through their exploits on global sporting stages.
“Kenyan sports has always attracted the best talents in the country and our values of hard work and service are deeply entrenched in our athletes. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics is another opportunity for us to promote disqualifies that position us for success in the sporting world. For this reason, my government has and will continue to support you as you take part in this years’ Olympic games.”
Speaking on the traveling contingent Chef De Mission Waithaka Kioni mentioned the team was extremely excited to be heading out to Kuruma and were in buoyant mood promising a good showing at the games.
Also, at the send-off event, East African Breweries Limited Managing Director, Jane Karuku conveyed her support for the team as the first team left for Japan earlier in the day.
“We are proud to be here to send off our athletes to Tokyo for the Olympic Games. Kenya Breweries has always enjoyed a special relationship with Kenyan sports and with Team Kenya in particular. These games are another opportunity for us to associate with our champions as they stand proud and tall on the international stage,” said Karuku.
Karuku further shared a message of support for the departing teams. “We wish all our athletes the best of luck as they set out to Kuruma today and in the coming days and weeks. We are confident of another stellar showing and we hope the added incentive of their new Tusker gear will add value to their experience as they go out on international duty.”
Described by many as the ‘Home of Champions’, Kenya rekindles their rich history with the Olympic Games that spans over 60 years. Kenyans are hopeful the athletes will add the country’s 103-medal tally at the games that kicks off on the 23rd July to 8th August.
