The Africa athletics team shifts base to Moi, Kasarani

Norah Jeruto Tanui  and Marion Kibor take the lead in the 3000m SC during the national trials two weeks ago at Safaricom Stadium, Kasarani.

The Kenya team has moved their training base from Nyayo Stadium to Kasarani Stadium, owing to the deplorable conditions of the facility.

Paul Mutwii, the Athletics Kenya vice president in charge of competitions said there were murmurs among st the athletes regarding the venue.

“The athletes, especially the sprinters, took issue with the tartan track at Nyayo, saying it was tough thus unsuitable for training,” said Mutwii.

“We also realized the inner lane, which is mostly used by the runners, is peeled off.”Mutwii added: “Nyayo Stadium is also crowded with activities unlike Kasarani, making it tricky for the athletes.”

“We have therefore made arrangements for the athletes to be training at Kasarani, just like we have others preferring Ngong and Karura forests.”

Mutwii said Kasarani offers options for the runners. “The warm up track is as good as the competition track and therefore the coaches can accommodate several athletes at ago in the intervals.”

Meanwhile, National Police hurdler Veronicah Chebet (110mH), Bonface Mweresa (400m), Fresha Mwangi (100m, 200m), Mary Tanui (100m, 200m), Damaris Mbula (100m, 4x100m) and Monica Zafania (100m, 4x100m) have been called up to the team.

Mutwii added: “We have also sent an invite to Carvin Nkata (the US-based 200n sprinter) and we are hoping he will link up with the team.”

“We are seeking to promote our sprinters further and including them in the team will inspire them going forward.”

However, Mutwii could not guarantee the late inclusion of a seat in plane down south. The impression they portray to the coaches during the residential camp will determine their fate even though we have done everything administrative in place including securing their visas,” observed Mutwii.
