The county targets to drill five boreholes in Ngao, Gururi, Waldena, and Lakole locations. Residents were forced to trek for long distances in search of water as most water pans have dried up
Speaking in Ngao village, acting manager of Tana River Water and Sewerage Company (TAWASCO) William Jillo said the drought response committee has set aside 30 million for the water sector.
The drilling of borehole exercise is set to be completed in two weeks; it has started at the Ngao water supply station and will supplement the services of Ngao water station which was commissioned in 1975.
The residents in affected area rely on water from the river Tana that dries up in the area during drought season.
Ngao water station serves more than 3000 families in Ngao village and its vicinity. The station currently can supply 1000 M3 per day.
The boreholes will be equipped with solar and the water will be pumped to the water supply station,’’ said Ag. Manager of TAWSCO William Jillo.
They have also purchased 30 tanks with capacities of 10000 liters to be distributed to the villages for water storage.
Bonaya Mikaya, a resident of Ngao said, ‘To say the truth this project came at the right time, we are facing drought as a county. It will supplement the water we are receiving in our location.’’
Alinisha Mayowa on her part extolled the county government for the timely intervention.
“We have been experiencing systemic water shortages. it will also serve neighbor locations like Tarasaa, Holbante, Kipao and Odha who also depend on water from Ngao.’’ She said
