Three people dead after shooting at US courthouse

Three people have died after a shooting at a courthouse in Michigan, USA. Officials said two members of court staff and the suspect had been killed at the Berrien County Courthouse.

“Brave officers” took down the shooter, said Sheriff Paul Bailey during a news conference Monday, July 11.

The suspect has been identified as 44-year-old Larry Gordon of Coloma, Mich. He was an inmate at the Berrien County Jail awaiting a court appearance on several charges.

Paul Bailey, Berrien County Sheriff, told a news conference that the shooting took place at about 2:25pm local time on the third floor of the St. Joseph, Michigan, courthouse.

Mr Bailey said Gordon was a prisoner who took a gun from one of two bailiffs escorting him to a courtroom and then began shooting as he tried to escape from custody. A sheriff’s deputy and civilian were also wounded, the Telegraph Reported.

The injured civilian was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph for treatment. They are listed in stable condition.

“The person had shot two bailiffs, they’re both deceased, and shot a deputy sheriff who is at the hospital right now being treated in an emergency room,” Bailey said.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder said police had secured the scene and begun an investigation.
