The Teachers Service Commission yesterday directed all Principals and their deputies to reside within premises.
The TSC CEO, Nancy Macharia announced that all school heads and teachers in charge of boarding aspects must live within the school compound to monitor happenings throughout the day so as to curb the rampant arson attacks in learning institutions.
“In boarding schools, all principals, deputies and teachers in charge of all boarding aspects and other key administrative staff must reside in school at all times as per the existing school policies,” Mrs Macharia said.
The pronouncement was made after a consultative meeting between the teachers’ employer and the Kenya Secondary School Head Teachers Association to explore possible reasons behind the spate of fires that has so far affected over 110 schools.
It was also announced that the Government will hire counselors for all schools who will be responsible for students’ social and academic development needs in order to address grievances before escalating to violence.
The meeting between TSC and the head teachers on the crisis in the education sector is set to continue on Thursday.
School principals have blamed drug abuse, poor diet, betting and teachers apathy for the torching schools by students.
