A 32-year-old suspected drug trafficker is in custody after being apprehended with bhang worth more than Sh13 million in Migori County.
According to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Edwin Okondo Nyagaga was intercepted along Giribe-Masara Road by officers from Oruba Police Station.
The operation was triggered by a tip-off from members of the public, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
The suspect was driving a black Toyota Kluger, registration number KBS 517N, which was found packed with eight sacks of bhang weighing a total of 457.6 kilograms.
“The estimated street value of the narcotics stands at Sh13,728,000,” stated the DCI.
In a move believed to be aimed at concealing the illegal activity, authorities also recovered four additional vehicle number plates from the car KBP 716H, KBT 673F, KBW 341T, and KBX 142P.
Police suspect these plates were intended to facilitate the transport of narcotics without detection.
Okondo was immediately escorted to Oruba Police Station where both the suspect and the illicit cargo are being held.
“He is currently undergoing processing and is expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are complete,” added the DCI.
The DCI commended the public for their vigilance and encouraged citizens to continue reporting suspicious activity anonymously through the toll-free number 0800 722 203.
This seizure is one of the most significant drug hauls in the region in recent months and highlights the evolving methods used by traffickers.
