In a dramatic early morning operation, two suspects were arrested for trafficking narcotics on a Nairobi-bound matatu from Busia. The suspects, Samuel Okello and Antony Omingo were ejected from the vehicle at the Kangemi flyover after a tip-off from the public.
The tip-off received through the “FichuakwaDCI” initiative, led to the discovery of 16 bales of bhang stashed in their travel bags.
The public’s vigilance highlights the importance of community involvement in combating crime, a principle enshrined in the Kenyan Constitution under Article 244, which mandates the National Police Service to work closely with the community.
The suspects were travelling on a Trippin Shuttle Sacco matatu when they were apprehended. The prompt action of the authorities highlighted the efficiency of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in responding to public tips and swiftly addressing criminal activities.
“The arrest of the two, Samuel Okello and Antony Omingo, followed a #FichuakwaDCI tip from members of the public, indicating the presence of the illicit cargo at the Trippin Shuttle Sacco matatu they were traveling in,” stated the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on X.
Following their arrest, Okello and Omingo were handed over to Anti-Narcotics detectives at DCI headquarters for further processing. This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Kenya and the critical role played by public cooperation and law enforcement agencies.
The Anti-Narcotics Unit will now investigate the origins and intended destination of the seized bhang, with the aim of dismantling the larger network involved in drug trafficking. The government continues to strengthen its efforts against narcotics through stringent enforcement of laws and active community participation.
Article 49 of the Kenyan Constitution ensures the suspects’ rights are respected during the judicial process, including the right to be informed of the charges, the right to legal representation, and the right to a fair trial.
