Tribunal to visit Nairobi National Park today to enforce order against SGR works

The National Environment Tribunal will visit the Nairobi National Park today to evaluate the status of an order suspending all activities on the Sh63 billion Standard Gauge Railway Phase 2.

According to plans, construction works on the SGR Phase 2 from Nairobi to Naivasha will cut through the park and work has been going on despite the tribunal’s April 5 orders.

The order was given after activist Okiya Omtatah and the Kenya Coalition for Wildlife Conservation appealed the decision by Nema to issue an Environmental Impact Assessment licence on January 10.

They said the EIA was hurriedly conducted without consultation and in disregard of procedural requirements.

The orders were served on Kenya Railways, Kenya Wildlife Service and China Road and Bridge Company — the main contractor. However, the construction has still been going on.
