The Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) has announced the hiring of 364 teachers to work in Wajir County.
Making the announcement on Tuesday afternoon at Wajir TSC offices, Wajir County TSC Director James Ogongo disclosed that 325 tutors will be deployed to Primary schools while 39 will take up positions in secondary schools.
The Director decried the low number of locals who applied for the advertised jobs even after the Commission re-advertised the position of 325 P1 primary school teachers.
“The condition was that both locals and non-locals who were already working in the County under school management boards were to be given first priority,” explained the Director, adding that it was disappointing that only four locals applied for the positions while 321 were non-locals.
Ogongo disclosed that the application forms have been verified and forwarded to TSC headquarters in Nairobi after the recruitment exercise and the successful applicants are expected to report to their work stations on September 1, 2022.
Congratulating the successful applicants, Ogongo noted that recruitment will help relieve the few teachers who were strained after the 2020 exodus of non-local teachers after incidences of insecurity in the County.
The Director however noted that the areas bordering Somalia such as Khorof Kharar, Diff and parts of Tarbaj sub counties will not receive teachers due to insecurity.
Addressing the media after the announcement, Wajir Kenya National Union of Teachers’ (KNUT) Executive Secretary Noor Mohammed attributed few applications by locals willing to join teachers colleges to lack of awareness about the teaching profession.
“I also attribute negligence by the county leadership to sponsor students from the county who perform well to pursue higher education. Personally, I encourage local students to take up teaching as it is a noble profession,” said the KNUT official.
