Ugandan Woman Charged with Drug Trafficking in Kenya After Extradition

By Grace Gilo

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has charged a Ugandan woman extradited to Kenya with trafficking in narcotic drugs.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), appeared before the JKIA court on Monday, facing charges related to the trafficking of narcotic drugs, specifically cannabis weighing 4,186.34 grams, with a market value of Ksh125,590.20. (one hundred and twenty-five thousand, five hundred and ninety shillings and twenty cents only).

“Prosecuting Counsel John Tago told the court that the accused person conveyed the said narcotic drugs in a carton box shipment, concealed in 25 shower curtains,” stated the ODPP.

“She allegedly committed the offence on May 18, 2023, at the DHL cargo shed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport,” ODPP added.

Ikareut pleaded not guilty to the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Njeri Thuku.

Her extradition to Kenya came after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) requested assistance from the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol). She was arrested in Uganda on August 5, 2025, before being transferred to Kenyan authorities.

“DPP has opposed the release of the accused person on bond, citing that the accused person is known to be an international supplier and local supplier in the distribution of drugs affecting the health of many youths; she is also believed to be part of a drug cartel and a major distributor and trafficker of the illegal drugs operating within the country and internationally,” ODPP added.

DPP further informed the court that releasing her on bond could jeopardize ongoing investigations and the arrest of her accomplices.

The case is set to be mentioned again on August 25, 2025, for further directions.
