Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has expressed deep sorrow following the death of Zambia’s former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, describing him as a dear friend and brother and a dedicated servant of the African continent.
“It is with deep sorrow and profound sadness that I have learned of the passing of my dear friend and brother, H.E. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, former President of the Republic of Zambia,” said Kenyatta in a heartfelt message through X.
President Lungu, who led Zambia from 2015 to 2021, passed away earlier this week, on Thursday the 5th of June. Tributes have been pouring in from across Africa, with Kenyatta joining leaders in hailing the late President’s contributions to his nation and the continent.
“President Lungu was not only a distinguished statesman who served his country with dedication and honor but also a man of humility, wisdom, and unwavering faith,” said Kenyatta.
He further commended Lungu for his commitment in ensuring the prosperity and unity of Zambia.
“His commitment to the prosperity and unity of Zambia was evident throughout his presidency, and his calm, measured leadership will be remembered by all who knew and worked with him,” said Kenyatta.
He also recalled the personal bond he shared with Lungu, recounting their meetings and discussions on the future of Africa.
“I mourn a trusted friend and fondly recall his visits to Kenya and the moments we shared discussing the future of our continent, the role of youth, and the importance of building bridges across our nations,” said Kenyatta.
Kenyatta added that President Lungu carried with him a quiet strength and a genuine desire to see Africa thrive in peace and dignity.
The former Kenyan head of state extended his condolences to Lungu’s family and the Zambian people.
“My thoughts and prayers are with his beloved wife, Mama Esther Lungu, their children, and the people of Zambia during this difficult time,” concluded Kenyatta.
