Uhuru rejects bill to compel Kenya Power compensate Consumers for Blackouts

President Uhuru rejected a bill that sought to compel Kenya Power company compensate consumers for blackout lasting more than three hours on Thursday.

The President declined to append his signature to the motion to give more time for the company to upgrade its systems.

Mr Kenyatta however gave a leeway for the Energy Bill 2015 to be re-introduced to him after passing through parliamentary amendments within the stipulated time.

The Bill which was sponsored by Mvita Member of Parliament Abduls wamad Shariff was passed by both the National Assembly and Senate giving hopes to majority of Kenyans who have previously suffered losses due to power outages.

According to the proposed law, Kenya Power would be compelled to pay both for physical and commercial losses incurred due to outages.

However, it gave an exception for cases emanating from calamities caused during incidents such as heavy downpour.

For physical injuries suffered due to blackouts, the Bill stated that compensation would be determined in court while commercial losses would be settled as a subsidiary in the customer’s bill.

The lighting company has on various instances been blamed over rampant cases of outages which lead to heavy losses especially in industries and businesses.
