The national chairman of the Democratic Party (DP) Mr Esau Kioni has called on political party leaders in the Mt Kenya region to unite and end wrangles for the political survival and a significant share in the next government.
Mr Kioni yesterday said the existence of several parties in the region should not be a setback to unity and charting a road map for the region to the 2022 General Election.
Speaking at Mahiga ward in Othaya constituency, Nyeri County, Kioni said “In Mt kenya region we have a lot of divisions and I would call upon all leaders and especially all leaders of political parties to get together and define our route towards 2022” .
He added that there is nothing wrong with having several political parties but they can come out and work together.
“If they work together that will be a force to reckon with and if we do not do that, we will be heading nowhere in the leadership of this country in future,” he declared.
Kioni noted that the wrangles are being occasioned by leadership ambitions adding that is normal while other politicians wanted to remain relevant in the political arena.
“During elections people must be heard and become relevant, if you keep quiet people will not know you,” Kioni said.
The party chairman urged the leaders to work under one umbrella to have a voice in national and regional politics.
He disclosed that DP is in the process of identifying potential candidates for the various elective seats in the 2022 General Election.
We are soon launching a campaign for all the potential candidates who would like to contest for leadership in this country to get in touch with us as DP,” said Kioni.
The politician added that the party has a presidential candidate but could not give his or her identity saying it was premature to do so.
Kioni dismissed the coronation of the National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi saying it was inconsequential terming it as an action of a few selfish people.
He added that leadership of the country at the moment is in the hands of President Uhuru and he is the undisputed Mt Kenya spokesman.
There is no way we can have two spokesmen or women at the same time,” he asserted.
Recently, the Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi was made the Mt Kenya region spokesman by a group of Kikuyu elders in a controversial ceremony at Mukurwe wa Nyagathanga in Murang’a county.
The chairman added that he has his own elected spokespersons at the ward level, constituency, county and President Uhuru Kenyatta at the national level adding that he had no problem with Muturi being enthroned as a cultural spokesman and made a cultural ambassador.
