Student Organization of Nairobi University (SONU) Chairman Babu Owino was yesterday evening arrested and detained at Kilimani Police Station.
The student leader was allegedly apprehended over a video circulated on social media showing him assaulting a fellow student at Kileleshwa.News of his arrest widely spread and was condemned by his supporters on social media who called for his immediate release.
The arrest was confirmed by Japheth Koome and mentioned that Mr Owino would be arraigned in court today morning.
Babu and an unidentified supporter were seen harassing his challenger in SONU’s chairmanship Mike Jacobs at a Petrol station.
However, the SONU Chairman denied the claims stating that Jacobs had attacked his team prompting him to defend himself. The two have been involved in a bitter rivalry over polls of SONU’s leadership with some of their confrontations turning physical.
Jacobs was expelled from the University after he was accused of leading a three-day protest against election of Babu which led to destruction of the institution’s property.
The demonstrations which saw a section of hostels burnt down caused a closure of the University for more than two weeks.
