Varsities get new council heads appointees

On Wednesday 15th, Education CS Fred Matiang’i appointed 22 new university council heads.

This followed the expiry of the term of the existing heads with the new appointees expected to begin working soon.

“Following the expiry of tenure of the councils of 22 State universities, I’m pleased to announce that I’ve duly constituted new councils in pursuant to the provisions of the Universities Act,” the statement read.

Those appointed include former Kenya Power MD Ben Chumo. He is to head Egerton University Council

Other heads of the councils include Dr Jane Nyakang’o for Dedan Kimathi University, Dr Timothy Mwangi Kiruhi for UoN, Prof Migot Adholla for KU, Dr Jeremiah Ntoloi Koshal (Moi), Dr Morompi ole Ronkei (Taita Taveta), Dr Musangi Jane Mutua for Pwani, Dr Kevit Desai for TUM and Halima Saado Abdillahi for TUK.

Dr Ephraim Amiani Mukisira will head Kisii University Council, Dr David Ojakaa (University of Eldoret), Dr Julius Tangus (Chuka), Dr Jeremy Bundi (Masinde Muliro), Dr Samuel Ochola (Maasai Mara), Dr Walter Ongeti (Jaramogi Oginga Odinga) and Dr Ken Nyaundi (Laikipia).

Completing the list includes Dr Issa Kipera (Maseno University), Dr Dulacha Galgalo (Meru University of Science and Technology), Dr Florence Kiragu (University of Kabianga), Dr John Kobia (Karatina University), Dr Ernest Mwangi (Kibabii) and Dr Mussolini Kithome (Turkana University College).

A council consists of nine members — five of them appointed competitively by the CS, according to Section 36 of the Act. Other members are PSs (Education and Treasury), a chairperson and the vice chancellor as an ex-officio member.
