According to a statement issued by the Office of the Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University, one of its buses ferrying students, on their way to Mombasa for an academic trip was involved in an accident with a tractor-trailer at Maungu, Taita Taveta County on Monday, 18th March.
Reports disbursed thus far indicate there are student fatalities. The University dispatched a team from the Main Campus and Mombasa Campus to the accident scene last night to assess the situation, assist survivors and provide accurate reports.
The team includes two doctors, medical personnel, University security officers and students and staff wellness officers. Some of the injured students are in the process of assessment for possible evacuation
to Nairobi depending on their status.
At the moment the institution has not released specific numbers or names but has confirmed several fatalities incurred. The University will provide a more comprehensive report later as information becomes available. Kenyatta University is deeply saddened by the tragic accident.
“On behalf of the University Council and the University Management, I wish to convey our deepest heartfelt condolences to the families of those who have lost loved ones in this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all,” the statement read in part.
