Vasco da Gama restoration

The national Government has allocated funds for the restoration of the ancient Vasco da Gama pillar and other key historical sites and monuments in the country.

Sports and Culture cabinet secretary Amina Mohammed who is currently on a tour of the coast region’s ancient historical sites and monuments did not however reveal the amount set aside for the rehabilitation of the ancient pillar, or the total allocation for the key projects aimed at protecting the historical sites and monuments.

Mohammed said the funds were set aside through the Sports Development Funds after President Uhuru approved the Sports Act into law.

Vasco da Gama is one of the oldest European cenotaphs built on the East African coast. It was built by the Portuguese in 1498 amid Muslim resistance. It gave direction for those following the sea route to India.
