Prolific forward Ulinzi Stars striker Stephen Waruru has been named the soldiers’ best player for the months of May and June following his goal scoring prowess.
Waruru grabbed the headlines a week ago for his overzealous celebrations following the last minute goal he scored to save a point as Ulinzi Stars came from two goals down to hold league leaders Gor Mahia to a 2-2 draw in Kisumu. The award was conjoined as there was only one match in June.
With the recognition, Waruru received a signed commemorative jersey as well as a cash appreciation token.
“We congratulate Waruru for having played a key role in the team this season and that is why we have rewarded him. As a club, we are sure there is more to come from him and we believe in his abilities,” Ulinzi Stars Chief Executive Officer Captain Godwin Baraza, said on the club’s official portal .
While receiving the award, Waruru who has so far scored 10 goals this season, said he was pleased, especially coming hot on the heels of the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) Player of the Month award for April.
“It is such a great honour to be recognized especially in a team that has very good players like Ulinzi. I can say I have been scoring the goals because of very good team work and I want to thank my fellow players,” Waruru noted.
“I am very pleased and this will now spur me to work harder and score more goals. This season as a team, we have to do something and everyone is working hard for that. It is not easy but we are ready to battle,” he added. The Kenyan international is very much on course to better his best ever goal scoring returns registered in 2011 when he was the KPL top scorer with a paltry 13 goals.
