Residents of Giribe in Suna West, Migori County will have their long water shortage crisis solved if the proposed Giribe Dam is completed within the proposed one-year period.
Governor Zachary Obado while addressing Giribe residents after dam ground-breaking ceremony at Wasimbete Ward, highlighted that the earth dam will immensely improve the live hoods of his people.
Giribe Earth Dam, which is projected to serve and benefit directly 1,260 homesteads in Suna West and 6,300 indirect residents in Kuria and some parts of Migori County.
The project will cover a total area of 304 hectares and will be funded with 36 million by the National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Growth Project (NARIGP) in partnership with the County Government of Migori.
The earth dam will have a total capacity of 28,000 cubic meters of water ones completed and will be used for human consumption, fish farming and irrigation purposes where maize, sweet potato, vegetable and arrowroot farmers are meant to benefit.
Governor Obado also emphasised that cattle drinking points will be set in specific areas to cater to the residents that practice daily farming. “We want this earth dam to change the lives of our people through farming and cattle rearing”, said the governor.
Mr. Obado stated that his government through the county department of agriculture had ensured that they transform Migori resident lives through agriculture. He also encouraged residents of Migori to practice other farming activities like agribusiness and beekeeping business.
