President William Ruto announced that the government would resume constructing the 200km Mau Mau roads. The President said the government had overcome debt challenges that had slowed key development programmes, including the Mau Mau roads.
In a speech yesterday, he explained that the roads would ease the transport of people and goods, facilitate trade and spur economic growth. The Head of State made the remarks at Nyambari in Lari Constituency, Kiambu County, during the construction launch of the Uplands-Kijabe-Maai Mahiu road.
The President also laid the foundation stone for Soko Mjinga Market in the same constituency. The market is projected to provide a safe environment for traders and consumers away from the busy Nairobi-Naivasha highway.
In December 2023, he committed to completing the construction of stalled road projects before commissioning new projects of a similar nature.
He noted that completed road projects would benefit the public sooner, improving their quality of life and potentially boosting economic growth across the country.
Last year, he commissioned the construction of a Ksh.1.6 billion 50-kilometre stretch of road in Ndaragwa, Nyandarua County. Launched in August, its construction was slated to be completed in 18 months.
He also launched the first tarmac road in Lamu East in November 2023, right after King Charles’ the third visit to Kenya.
