The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory for various regions across Kenya, including sections of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the Highlands both to the west and East of the Rift Valley.
In the statement issued on 1st April, the met department warned that more than 30mm of moderate rainfall with gushy winds is to be expected in 24hrs in parts of the Lake Victoria basin, Rift Valley, Highlands of the West and East of the Rift Valley, and parts of Nairobi.
According to Dr. David Gikungu, the director of the Kenya Met department, the downpour is expected to intensify to 40mm in 24 hours and spread to the Southwestern lowlands, Coast, and the Northern sector on Wednesday 3rd April 2024. A reduction is however expected on Thursday 4th April.
The predictions also indicate the possibility of floods and flash floods in the affected regions, urging the public to stay vigilant. Additionally, people are advised against driving or walking through flooded areas or open fields, and to refrain from seeking shelter under trees to minimize the risk of lightning strikes.
The met department has also cautioned of strong winds with potential damage to buildings, trees and structures.
The department is closely monitoring the weather patterns and will continue to provide updates and advisories as the situation evolves.
