Wilson Sossion blame Fred Matiang’i over ongoing don’s strike

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary Wilson Sossion has blamed the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Dr. Fred Matiang’i over the lectures strike.

Addressing a preser today, the KNUT Secretary blamed the CS over ongoing dons’ strike for allegedly varying Sh10b CBA and failing to sign deal agreed with lecturers.

The Lecturers, led by their union officials, UASU, went on strike on Monday after the government failed to wire the amount agreed on during the CBA negotiations to the institutions bank accounts.

The implementation will take place in two phases

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i Saturday said the Sh10 billion will be spread across two financial years.

“The implementation of the Collective bargaining Agreement (CBA) would straddle the two-financial years 2016/2017 and 2017/2018,” Dr Matiang’i said.

He announced that the Ministry of Education has wired Sh4.8 billion into the respective bank accounts of 31 public universities and colleges.

“The rest of the amount would come from the 2017/2018 Financial Year,” he said. The government signed a CBA with University Academic Staff Union and the Kenya University Staff Union (Kusu).
