Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ana Ivanovic Weds

Germany and Manchester United star Bastian Schweinsteiger has married former world No 1 tennis player Ana Ivanovic.

The pair have enjoyed mixed sporting results of late, with Schweinsteiger’s Germany losing in the semi-finals of the recently concluded Euro 2016 tournament, while Ivanovic exited in Round 1 at Wimbledon a fortnight ago.

The pair, who have been dating since 2014, made it official at City Hall (also known as the fancier-sounding Palazzo Cavalli) before being whisked away in a boat on the canal.

The 31-year-old Manchester United midfielder was devastated after failing to reach the final of the Euros when he gave away a penalty against France in the semis.

His new wife Ana (28), the world number 25, also suffered a disappointing first round exit at Wimbledon this year.

The lack of silverware between the famous sporting couple seemed to be a distant memory however as they emerged from Venice city hall.

The bride stunned onlookers with her beautifully simple floor-length gown featuring a ruffled skirt, while her new husband wore a two piece blue suit.

As the wedding party left, the newly-weds climbed on to a boat with guests.

Such was the intense media spotlight on the couple, German media claimed friends and family were not allowed to know the location of the ceremony in advance.

Instead, they were simply told to turn up at Munich Airport on Monday morning before boarding a private jet.

Schweinsteiger has recently signed a three-year contract with Manchester United and is expected to stay to play under new manager Jose Mourinho.
