The Ministry of Education is collecting data to assess the rain’s impact on schools before their reopening next week.

All Regional Directors of Education have been directed to provide data and information from their regions on the effects of the long rains currently ongoing countrywide.

In a circular to all Regional Directors of Education, written by the Director General, Dr. Elyas Abdi, the officers have also been instructed to work closely with schools Boards of Management, and other stakeholders to ensure that all basic institutions in their regions open for the second term.

Education Institutions are set to open for the second term of the school calendar on 29th April 2024, however, there are concerns following the heavy rainfall and floods experienced in several parts of the country.

According to Dr. Abdi, the Ministry of Education is collecting data and information to establish the readiness of all Basis Education institutions as they reopen for the second term.

“The data on the effects of the rains and flooding will be crucial for planning and sharing with the emergency cluster working groups,” he said.

The circular follows preparedness assurances from the Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang.

Speaking during the Kenya National Examination Council’s first Annual Symposium on Competency-Based Assessment in Nairobi, the PS assured that preparations for the second term are currently underway.

This is in line with President Ruto’s directives to have the Ministry of Education as part of the Multi-agency team on floods.

“I can assure all of us that as already directed by the President we are all prepared and looking forward to our children going to school next week,” the PS said.

“As a ministry, we shall be part of the multi-agency team so that we adequately work with our colleagues to ensure that children will be safe when we go back to school next week,” he further added.
